A Little Bit of Grace Design

Today I’m excited to introduce Alison from the Etsy Shop Grace Design. I met Alison recently at a “Creative Women in Business” Meeting in Toronto. Being new to Toronto it was so much fun to meet a wonderful group of women that I have creativity in common. Along with running her fabulous Etsy Shop, Alison holds a BDes (Bachelor of Design) from OCAD, works as a Graphic Designer and is a very talented photographer! Read a little about her creative life! ♥

Where you always crafty as a child?
I used to hold craft meetings for neighborhood children in my bedroom! I also used to always draw clothes and sketch out little clothing shops. I always thought I would go into fashion design but then for some reason, veered into graphic design. I love graphics though and it has been very useful in applying to my business ventures.

What started your love for fabrics?
When I was about 16 i went to a craft fair with my mom and aunt and I saw a woman making clothing from used East Indian sari silks. Needless to say, it left a huge impression on me. So much so that as soon as I was old enough to travel on my own (20) I went to India and on a silk buying trip. I came back with a backpack full of sari silks and started sewing all kinds of stuff. Those were my early beginnings. A few years later I discovered Japanese kimono’s and started sewing with those and have been working with them ever since.

Where do you find inspiration for new ideas?
I used to look at a lot of magazines but nowadays I find online design blogs to be the best resource. There is so much out there it is just mind blowing. I snoop around Etsy a lot, visit lot’s of craft shows. I also try to go on one big trip a year to get inspiration. Last year my boyfriend and I went to Mexico City and Oaxaca and this year, we are planning on visiting Morocco. I also look at nature, I love to sit by the water and write in my journal.

Do you have any plans for Grace Design in the upcoming year?
I have some very different things in store for Spring, working with linens and kimono’s. I also will be incorporating some screen printing in the coming weeks. Perhaps a couple of photo shoots and some bigger craft fairs like The One of a Kind Show.

What are your favorite things about selling on Etsy?
Lately I am really loving the resources that Etsy provides like their Success emails and their fantastic and informative blog. Also, the obvious, being able to reach a larger audience around the world. I think it is just neat that something like Etsy exists and has been so successful!

As a thank you to all my readers Alison is offering a 20% discount in her Etsy Shop when you use the coupon code SpringLove11 at checkout!
